2025 CoREi Members’ Meeting
The Corporate Renewable Energy Initiative (Korea Sustainability
Investing Forum(KoSIF), UN Global Compact Network Korea, WWF-Korea) held the 2025
CoREi Members’ Meeting at Aston Hall, British Embassy Seoul, on Wednesday,
January 22, 2025. The meeting was organized to review renewable energy policy
and industry trends for 2025 and share corporate cases on strategies for
expanding renewable energy use, exploring directions for a sustainable energy
transition.
Hyunjin Cho, Deputy Director at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and
Energy, opened the program with a presentation on '2025 Trends in Korea's
Renewable Energy Policy.' Building on the Strategy for Strengthening the
Renewable Energy Supply Chain announced last May, he introduced plans to expand
renewable energy through government-led, planned deployment and to invigorate
the voluntary renewable energy market by opening a PPA brokerage market and
issuing certificates for self-generation facilities. A Q&A session followed
with Hyunjin Cho, Deputy Director at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and
Energy, and Jeongseok Lee, Head of the RE100 Team at the Korea Energy Agency,
covering discussions around self-generation facility certificates and the PPA
brokerage market.
Next, Heekyung Han, Officer at the British Embassy Seoul, gave a
presentation on 'The UK's 2030 Renewable Energy Plan.' She introduced the UK's
'2030 Clean Power Mission' and explained that the UK plans to shift at least
95% of its electricity to clean energy by 2030 and raise renewable generation
capacity to two to three times current levels.
Presentations on corporate cases followed. Inho Jeon, Specialist at
LG Energy Solution, presented 'LG Energy Solution: RE100 Status and
Recommendations,' outlining the company's carbon neutrality goals of achieving
RE100 by 2030, carbon neutrality by 2040 and RE100 across its supply chain by
2050, together with implementation strategies including the switch to renewable
energy, the establishment of a carbon-negative roadmap, and the provision of
carbon neutrality guidelines to help suppliers move to renewable energy.
Finally, Hwanju Lee, General Manager at NH Investment &
Securities, presented 'SI Collaborative Financing Solutions and Financing
to Accelerate the RE100 Transition,' introducing cases of an 'SI (Strategic
Investment) collaborative financing solution' that allows even the early
development costs of renewable energy projects to be raised on the domestic
financial market, along with cases of 'financing to accelerate the RE100
transition' involving direct PPA rooftop solar financing.
*Corporate
Renewable Energy Initiative (CoREi) is a Korean initiative that encourages
companies to voluntarily transition to renewable energy and supports them in
setting and implementing the resulting targets. Jointly launched in 2020 by
Korea Sustainability Investing Forum(KoSIF), UN Global Compact Network Korea
and WWF-Korea, it builds an ambition loop between policymakers and the private
sector to drive substantive change in renewable energy policy. Beyond helping
companies resolve the challenges they face inside and outside their
organizations in procuring renewable energy, it serves as a channel for sharing
awareness and exchanging information on expanding renewable energy use.
